- Callaway Pioneer Is Dead
Mrs. Martha Craig Died This Morning at Her Home In McCredie.
Funeral Thursday Afternoon
Mrs. Martha B. Craig, 91 years old, died at her home in McCredie about 2:00 o'clock Wednesday morning after a week's illness. Funeral services were held at Richlan Baptist church, northeast of Fulton, Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and burial was in the cemetery of that church.
Mrs. Craig was born in Culpepper county, Kentucky, July 24, 1831, and is the last of a family of six or eight children. She came to Missouri when a young woman, her maiden name being Miss Martha Carter. Her husband, the late James Tolliver Craig, died about twenty years ago. She is survived by four daughters and one son, all living in or near McCredie: R.N. Craig, Mrs. S.A. West, Mrs. J.W. Martin, Mrs. Virgil Epperson and Miss Mattie Lou Craig, who lived with her mother. Quite a number of relatives also are living in Fulton and other parts of the county.
Mrs. Craig was one of the pioneer women of Callaway who always lent her aid to the good causes of the county. Friends here extend sympathy to all those who mourn her death.
(note: born in Green Co., Kentucky not Culpepper, her parents were born in Culpepper Co., Virginia)

Notes |
- In 1850 she is living at home with mother, Mary Beavers. They are listed with John Smyth in the 12th Dist, Callaway Co., MO with Robert (24), James (20), Martha (19), Elisa (14), William (12) & Sarah (9). The children are all listed as Beavers.John Smith is either Mary's older brother or some other relative. Robert, James, Martha are Robert & Mary Carter's children. Their ages match later records. Elisa, William & Sarah being born after 1833 are Mary & Barnett Beavers' children. John, Alexander, Mary Ann are already married and a father at this time.
1880 census lists a Richard Carter, age 5 nephew, living with this family. We think this was a son of her brother, Robert.

Mrs. Martha B. Carter Craig 24 Jul 1831 28 Jun 1922 Callaway Weekly Gazette
Death certificate gives parents as Robert P. Carter and Polley Smith, which is important because it verifies the original letter written in the early 1970's from a Carter relative who knew that John G. Carter's parents were Robert P. Carter and Polly Mary Smith.
Her obituary gives Culpepper county Kentucky as her birthplace, there was no county by that name in Kentucky, however, her father was born in Culpepper county Virgina, so whoever gave the information for the obituary must have been thinking about that. As far as I have found records, they lived in Green county Kentucky when she was born.
