Notes |
- John Allen emigrated to York Co. Penn. from Ireland ca. 1753. No land records found there for him. After the Revolution moved to Iradell (Rowan) Co. N. Carolina. Was in the Continental Army. (Not Proved). Moved to Montgomery Co. Ky, near Mt. Sterling ca. 1795. Some descendants think they may have come late in life to St. Louis or St. Charles, to be near her nephew Gov. Hamilton Gamble, but no proof has been found of where they died or are buried.....Margaret Corbin Lutz.
Possible father and mother James Allan and Grizzell Bruce and the birth info of John Allen are written in a letter from Crockett Harrison to Margaret Lutz dated Aug.3, 1990. Crockett states that it is not definitive proof, but implies that is very likely correct. But, a check with LDS Family Search for James Allan/Allen with Grizzell/Grissel and other Grizel combos yields quite a few variations of possibilities, most from Scotland in the same time period.
From the book Pioneer Families of Missouri, which was written in 1876 and is not always accurate:
"ALLEN, David Allen and his wife, MARGARET GAMBLE, were natives of Scotland, but came to America and settled in south Carolina prior to the revolution. Mr. Allen took part in the war, and saw some hard service in the Continental army. After the return of peace he removed to KY., and settled in Montgomery Co. He had 2 sons, James and Joseph, who came to MO. The former married SARAH SMITH, of Bath Co., KY, and settled in Callaway Co., MO in 1825. Joseph married MARGARET MURPHY, and settled in Callaway Co., about the same time. The children of James Allen were Jane, Caroline, John, Nancy, David, James, William, Milton, Mary, Harvey, Martha and Virginia. The children of Joseph Allen were Clarinda, Jane, Grezella, Margaret, Amanda, John and Sally."
