Craighead Goes to Montana
Callaway Man Becomes President of Western University
Dr. Edwin Boone Craighead, native Callawegian, now president of Tulane University at New Orleans, has been elected president of the University of Montana, located at Helena. Dr. Craighead will accept and begin his new work as soon as he can be released from Tulane. He thinks a wider field of usefulness is to be found at the head of a state university, and therfore gives up the Tulane presidency.
Dr. Craighead was the unanimous choice of the board which selected him for president of the Montana institution. He was recommended by such men as Cyrus Northrup, former president of the University of Minnesota; George H. Denney, president of the University of Alabama; Jacob Gould Schurman, president of Cornell University, and Edward A. Aderman, president of the University of Virginia.
Dr. Craighead was born at Ham's Prairie, this county, March 3, 1861. He received his education at Westminster and central colleges in Missouri; Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; and the universities of Leipsic and Paris. He has been president of the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical College, Central College at Fayette, the State Normal School at Warrensburg, and Tulane University.
