    • W. H. Dawson Died Monday
Native of Callaway County Died at Callaway Hospital After Illness of Two Years.
William Holland Dawson, 82 years old, one of the pioneer residents of Callaway county, died Monday night at 10:30 o'clock at the Callaway Hospital where he had been for the last two years. He suffered a paralytic stroke April 5, 1924, and never recovered, living just two years to the day.
The body was taken to the First Baptist church Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock and rested there until 11:00 when services were conducted by the Rev. A.W. Tandy, pastor of the church. Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery.
Mr. Dawson was born August 3, 1843, on his father's farm, northwest of Fulton. He was a son of Robert H. Dawson, a native Virginian, who settled in Callaway county in 1830. His mother was Miss Mary Herring, also of Virginia.
In 1862 he engaged in freighting across the plains. Returning home the following spring he followed farming until 1868 when he accepted a clerkship in a store in Fulton. In 1877 he was appointed street commissioner of Fulton and lent a great deal of his energy to improving the street of the town. While serving as street commissioner he also was appointed deputy county collector.
Mr. Dawson was married February 25, 1869, to Miss Mary Annis Brandon, of this county, who died April 12, 1919. The couple had no children, but reared Mrs. Robert Rogers, of Columbia, taking her into their home when she was three years old. He is survived by one brother, B.Y. Dawson, of near Readsville, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Franklin, of Fulton, also a number of nephews and nieces.
Mr. Dawson united with the Baptist church of this city in 1883, and took an active part in its affairs until he was stricken with paralysis. He was treasurer of the Sunday school for 25 years, and was one of the trustees of the church building. He also was prominent in Odd Fellow circles in this county, having been a member of the Fulton lodge for 57 years. Up until the time he was taken to the hospital he was a familiar figure on the streets of Fulton and was known to almost everyone in the town, rarely missing a day going down town for a chat with his friends. Sympathy is extended to those who are bereaved by his death.

William H. Dawson, page 641, History of Callaway Co., Missouri, 1884:
Like most of the citizens of Callaway county, now approaching middle age, Mr. Dawson is a native of this county, and was born on the 3d of August, 1843. His father was Robert H. Dawson, from Virginia, who settled here as early as 1830, and died in 1872. His mother was, before her marriage, a Miss Mary A. Herring, also of Virginia. She still survives and resides in the county. They reared six children including W.H. He was reared on his father's farm, and being eligible for military service when the war broke out in 1861, enlisted in the Confederate army, or rather, the State (Southern) service. At the expiration of his term of enlistment (six months), he returned home, but in the fall of 1862, engaged in freighting across the plains, which he continued until the following spring. Returning home again, he followed farming without material interuption up to 1868, when he accepted a clerckship in a store at Fulton, and sold goods for the three succeeding years. He then resumed farmning, but was afterwards offered a position in a store on favorable terms, and accepting this, he followed clerking until 1877, when he was appointed street commissioner of Fulton. Mr. Dawson held the office of street commissioner for sex years, and during this time carried forward to completion a thorough system of street improvement. Fulton is now noted for the excellence of its streets, being ahead of almost any town in the interior of the State in this particular. For this gratifying condition of affairs, the credit is preeminently due to Mr. Dawson. Practically, everything except the funds he furnished, and is due to his zeal, influence and enterprise mroe than to any other man's, that the necessary funds were raised. Insisting on the necessity of good streets, he brought the ublic to his way of thinking; and the people, having confidence in his integrity and ability to carry forward the work, came liberally to his recommendations. The result is that he came fully up to their expections and his own intentions. While serving as street commissioner, Mr. Dawson was also made deputy county collector. Being an excellent business man, a good accountant and quick at clerical work, he is an invaluable assistant in the collector's office. Personally he is honorable and gentlemanly, and is popular in Fulton, and in fact all over the county. On the 25th of February, 1869 he was married to Miss Mary A. Brandon, a young lady of this county. She was born November 10, 1842, and was a daughter of Francis and Ann (Bennett) Brandon. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson have no children. Both are members of the Baptist church, and he is a member of the I.O.O.F.

Francis Brandon, Mary Ann Brandon Dawson's father married Georgie Anne Herring (George W. Herring Sr.'s daughter) in 1876.

His sister, Martha Dawson Franklin, signed the death certificate.
