George W. Rogers aged 86 years, died of la grippe and a complication of diseases at his home, four miles north of Fulton, last Saturday night, after an illness of nine days. Funeral services were conducted at Carrington Baptist church Monday morning by Rev. C.B. Duncan, pastor of the Fulton Methodist church, and burial was in the Carrington cemetery.
Mr. Rogers was born in Blooery, Hampshire county, Cirginia, March 5, 1825. He was married December 27, 1859 to Miss Sarah Jane Willey, of Virginia, who survives him. He served under the famous Ashby in the Confederate army, being attached to the Seventh Virginia cavalry. Several years after the Civil war Mr. and Mrs. Rogers moved to Callaway county where they have made their home for forty years.
Nine of their eleven children survive, namely; Robert, living northeast of Fulton; Rev. James H., Athens, Ga.; Owen, living at home; John H., living north of Fulton; Thomas W., Omaha, Neb.; Elwood, Edmond, Okla.; Mrs. W.T. Brooks, Hatton; Mrs. T.E. Blackburn, northwest of Fulton, and Miss Mattie, at home.
Mr. Rogers became a member of the Methodist church in 1875. He was a zealous Christian, a man of high principles, a good neighbor, and an intelligent and useful citizen. The most of his years in Callaway were spent in the vicinity of Carrington, where he was highly esteemed and enjoyed the confidence and good will of those who knew him. The Gazette extends sympathy to those who mourn his death.
