    • Mrs. Rhoda A. Blackburn wife of W. H. Blackburn deceased was born in St. Louis Co. Mo. Oct. 27, 1823. Was married Nov. 16, 1847, and died at the home of her son, G. A. Blackburn, near Readsville, Mo. Feb. 14, 1902.
She professed saving faith in Christ and joined the Methodist Church early in life, has ever remained a true and faithful christian. A purer,
better woman never lived, so kind and affectionate that to know her was but to love her. The poor and needy found in her a sympathizing friend and a willing cheerful helper.
The loss of this christian character will be shared by all who knew her, but most deeply felt by the afflicted family, consisting of seven
children, two daughters and five sons. Oh, how they miss her, and while they bow in humble submission to the will of the Almighty, they feel that her place can never be filled. Though time, with its changes may wear the traces of tears away, her place will still be vacant, the heart lonely. Nevermore may they seek the wise counsel of a kind and loving mother, or receive her blessing. Though the world turn from them, she was for them.
She was stricken with lung and stomach trouble, but all the time she was patient, resigned and without a murmer accepted the will of God.
Through many months of hopes and fears her faithful children nursed and loved her, but death regards not the yearnings of those who love, but cruelly takes from us our loved ones. This earthly life has been fitly characterized as a pilgrimage through a vale of tears; every heart has its griefs. What family circle remains unbroken? No vacant chair, voices and footsteps returning no more, alas! the rude hand of death is everywhere, we have all felt or seen this power, and while our cup of sorrow is so full over the loss of our loved ones the sweet voice of faith whispers, "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter," and trusting these promises, we should be content to wait; although the crushed heart can scarcely lift itself in prayer, yet we must bow submissively to the will of an all-wise God, who is too wise to err, too good to be unkind and too true to be unjust.
The subject of this sketch had been very feeble for some time, but was not expected to die so soon. Death comes sometimes like a thief at
midnight and takes a loved one e're we say farewell; it was thus he came this time. She did not share that happy, yet, sad farewell to her loved ones as christians often wish to do; taking each one by the hand and bidding them a sweet good bye, still, all is well, the Lord knoweth what is best for his people. All things work together for good to them that love God. She lived a useful life and has gone to her rest and reward. Bereaved, weep not God takes from us our earthly friends that we may look upon Him as he is-our very best friend and only comforter in time of trouble.
May our gracious, heavenly Father sustain and comfort the bereaved family. As we bow in bereavement and weep tears of sorrow for one
departed, let us think and feel that she is better off than we. She is waiting by the river and the writer of these lines wants to meet her, with
many loved ones gone before, just beyond the dark river that we all must cross.
