- Death of Samuel Berry.
Samuel Berry, aged 73 years, one of the well-known residents of Callaway county, died on Wednesday evening of last week at the home of his son, James Edward Berry, at Hollywood, a suburb of Los Angeles, Cal. News of his death was transmitted in a message received by his son, Prof. George W. Berry, of Fulton, last Friday morning.
Mr. Berry had not been in the best of health in recent years and last October, in company with Mrs. Berry, departed for California to spend the winter. His death, the message stated, however, was very sudden and unexpected. Interment occurred in California.
Mr. Berry was born near Reform, February 14, 1838, and with the exception of several short periods, including his service in the Confederate army during the Civil War, was a life long resident of the Kingdom. For many years he was a farmer and stockman of the county, but removed to Fulton about ten years ago and since lived a retired life.
He was married to Miss Fannie McCall of Reform, on February 8, 1866, who, with the two sons mentioned above, survives him. One daughter, Miss Stella Berry, died ten years ago.
His ancestry runs back to Richard Berry, one of the pioneers of the state of Kentucky. The latter was his grandfather, and the kinsman and guardian of Nancy Hanks, who became the wife of Thomas Lincoln, father of the lamented president, Abraham Lincoln. Richard Berry signed the marriage contract for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lincoln, necessary in nuptial events in those days. The original contract is said to be in the hands of the McCluer Publishing Company of New York.
