Beloved and longtime local businessman, Joseph C. Wickell, 91, of Fulton, Missouri, passed Thursday, May 20, 2010, at his home. He was born October 10, 1918, in Callaway County, Missouri, a son of the late Benjamin Wickell and Hattie Kemp Wickell. On May 29, 1940, he was united in marriage to Wanda May Taggart. She survives at their home. Joe and Wanda would have celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary on May 29.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by sons Mike and Gale Wickell, and their families: Mike's wife Claire, and children, Melissa, Lauren, David, and Tracy Hook, her husband, David, and their sons, Matthew and Alex; and Gale's wife, Debra and daughter, Leigh Wickell of Springfield, Missouri. Joe is also survived by brother, Don Wickell and wife, Clois of Fulton, sister Mary Ruth Henderson of Columbia; sister-in-law Evelyn Frye of Jefferson City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Edith McAtee, Alice Mosley, and brothers Henry, Kenneth, and Louis.
Joe served in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII and later worked as a radio tester for TWA Airlines in Kansas City. He then returned to Fulton, working for the International Shoe Factory until 1948. Joe was a pioneer of radio and television technology, holding a first class radio license. He loved inventing, photography, horticulture, and wandering the backroads. Joe owned and operated the Zenith dealership, Wickell's TV in Fulton for 48 years. He was a lifetime member of the Fulton V.F.W. Post 2657, member of the Fulton Men's Bowling Hall of Fame and very active member of the Court Street United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 24, 2010, at the Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton, Missouri, with Rev. Dr. Diana Loomis and Pastor Steve Mallinckrodt officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Maupin Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Callaway Memorial Gardens.
