Maupin Funeral home obituary |
- John E. Douglas, age 85, died at Fulton Nursing and Rehab Center on Sunday, November 29, 2009. He was born in Fulton on September 19, 1924, to Dennis Givings and Bertha (Backer) Douglas. On October 19, 1945, in the study of Rev. John B. Spragens, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fulton, he united in marriage with Peggy Ruth Rose. They shared 64 years together. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fulton.
Upon graduation from Fulton High School, he entered the service of his county in the 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division of the United States Army, during World War II; seeing action in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe from June 22, 1943 to December 11, 1945. The 75th Infantry was the famous "Diaper Brigade", which had an average of 17 years among it's members. It was the youngest American combat unit ever sent into battle. Douglas was wounded twice, receiving the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters and receved the Silver Star for Valor. His attempted rescue of a fallen comrade earned him a presidential citation from President Harry S. Truman for service to his county. In 1998, when the theme for Kingdom Days was "In the Line of Duty", he was selected as Grand Marshall, for his service to his country and community.
Mr. Douglas worked many trades. He was a butcher for Mayhew's Market, and for 15 years was a painter and machinist for Harbison-Walker Refractories; then in 1962 he joined his brother, Louis, as a tool and die maker for J.A. Buchroeder Company, Columbia, Mo. There, his love of art came to full fruition and in 1969 he started Douglas Engraving, manufacturing dies for coins, jewelry, and engraving plaques in the garage of his home. He was hired by the Charleston mint to design commenorative coins for NASA and the Lincoln Mint, in Mississippi, to design commemorative coins for the moon shots, Mardi Gras, Liberty Bowl, and Kingdom Supper, to name a few of more than 3,000 dies; as well as designing and engraving molds for college and high school rings.
He served as President of the Callway County Chamber of Commerce in 1979 and was the organizer of the Energy Fair. He also helped with the 125th Anniversary Celebration that became the first Kingdom Days. After retirement in 1987, he enjoyed dancing, horseshoe pitching, playing pool wth his friends at the Senior Center, traveling and wintering in the Rockport, Texas community.
Mr. Douglas is survived by; his wife, Peggy; a daughter, Terry Elaine and her husband, Merlin Smith; a son, John Robert andhis wife, Nancy K. Douglas; a daughter-in-law, Darla Douglas; six grandchildren, Doug Smith, Patricia Smith-Wood, Jennifer Douglas-Derleth, John Michael Douglas, Kathryn S Douglas, and Jonathan P.
