    • Met Death Under Clay Car.
John Ausfahl Killed Saturday Within Hailing Distance of Home.
John Ausfahl, aged 57 years, for more than twenty years sexton of Fulton cemeteries, was crushed to death at about 3:00 o'clock Saturday evening, under one of the big surface cars of the Fulton Fire Brick Company, used by that concern in hauling clay from their pit on the Jefferson road to their plant in the north part of the city.

The accident occurred within hailing distance of Mr. Ausfahl's home, just a few minutes after he had left there in high spirits, following a romp with several of his smaller children. He had arisen from an afternoon nap and after playing a few minutes with his children, told members of his family he was going to the pit for a short while.

At the time of the accident he was riding on one of the two cars in use between the pit and factory which are drawn by a traction engine. They road leading from the pit is very rough and eneven, and witnesses say the car on which he was riding gave a lurch to one side, unseating him from his place on top of the cars and throwing him beneath the wheels. One of the wheels crushed his shoulder causing almost instant death. The men in charge of the engine brought it to a stop as quickly as possible but not soon enough to prevent the car from inflicting fatal injuries.

Coroner W.F. Reily held an inquest shortly after the accident, the jury returning a verdict of accidental death. The body was removed to the Humphreys Herndon undertaking rooms and prepared for burial.

Funeral services were conducted at the family home Sunday afternoon, Rev. William Castle officiating. Interment occurred in the old cemetery.

Mr. Ausfahl was born in New Jersey and was married to Miss Dora Canemann in New Hartford, Mo., about thirty years ago. Eight children were born of the union, four of whom, with the mother, survive. Mr. Ausfahl was insured for $3,000, carrying a policv for $2,000 in the Maccabees and a policy for $1,000 in the A.O.U.W.

Date of birth on death certificate is incorrect. Date I am using came from his headstone.

His obit says he was born in New Jersey, consistent with 1910 census. However, 1900 census says he was born in Germany. No idea which is correct.
