      This is a letter written to Mary R. Caldwell from her father and stepmother Henry and Nancy Holeman. It is written by Nancy.

      your very kind Letter of inquire has come to hand received 24th December & as this is a beautiful day & nothing in the way I will try to answer it in the best manner I can altho I feel much at a loss how to purform we are all well & getting along Tolerably well Nancy Small has another son will be 2 weeks old at 8 oclok to Night. Kitty Hansard has been hear 2 weeks on tomorrow Mag & Kate went to singing school Mr George Petty & Rile went with them Mr Small has found a place just to his notion I think about fifty miles from Omaha on the Rail Road or near it west of Omaha near a large Town called Freemont he has got his Land paid for & now working in Omaha for three Dollars fifty cents & expects to be in the spring for his family Nancy has not got the hair Meca sent her we sold 4 Hogs for Ninty Dollars & fifteen cents we milk 2 Cows now, we milked 4 in the Faul & ther was only 2 good horns belonging to the 4 2 had no horns at all 2 had one a piece we killed ten hogs we have fine Parsnips tolerable Cabbage Potatoes in abundance a few Goards & plenty of Onions we get a plenty of eggs Rile is going to stay with us another year Jacob Maddox has another Boy about 2 weeks old Your Father went to see your Aunt America last Thurs day

      He sais Irwin has been up to see Jose Brown and stain up all Night at your Brother Williams they wire all well he said he was going back again this week to see Jese he sais he must have a wife there is a talk of Sanford Harrison Maring Coaty McYara Wat Bagby maried the Widoed Fields Old Jesse Tearmer Maried Miss Weinscot there is a school going on Bob Nicles Mrs Coliers Brother is the Teacher Mr Benson has gon to Merilans took his children with him, your sister America Sugget Post Office is Middle Town we thank you for kind invitation to see you we would like very much to see you all for I can immagion in my mind how you all look Henry & his little ones pratling around your knees & his Wife doting on her kind Husband I am truly glad to hear you are getting along so well and would like happen in some day while you are together but you know howe we are situated & it is no use to talk about it Your Father sais he don't make Money enough to go so far. He sometimes talks as if he is tite run to buy a little shugar and coffee & pay Taxes which is very high one hundred & Ten Dollars & Ten Cents This is enough to make a fellow grunt a little now we will Change the subject as we turn to the next page

      Your mother told your father that there was a letter received by her Grand Mother Renick that there was a legacy left to her by her Brother or some relation her Brother was a Sea Captain, Chambers was his Name but don't know his giving name your aunt America had ?win to write a list of Names which we will send in this letter Mr Sugget was talking about trying to get Uncle Jesse Holem [Holeman?] and Son who is in Congress to attend to this business or get some information about it but don't know that he has ever written to him or not perhaps henry can get some information in that way
      I don't know anything else to write unless I begin a new subject & I have not time now I am looking for the youngsters to come back and I must attend to Dinner we send our love to you all good by

      Polly Chambers, before she married Married James . Rennick. Lived in Woodford County Kentucky.
      Polly Chambers Sister lived in Boston about the year 1790. Her name was Sprauge.

      1880 census has a Sally Nash, 39 years old living with the Holmans and listed as "other".
      Have old photo of a baby Nattie Nash, about 1900 vintage. Don't know who she is.
