These are pictures of some of my Herring, Carter, Carrington, Wilks, Day, Fletcher, Overton, and Simco relatives. All these people lived in Callaway County Missouri unless otherwise noted. Click on a picture to see the full sized picture. New pictures added 05/16/06.
George Washington Herring Sr., born 1794 in Albemarle Co. Virginia. This picture was taken before 1876. He was my great great grandfather. A veteran of the War of 1812, he came to Callaway Co. Missouri in 1835 and settled on land south of Fulton Mo. He married Lucy Simco in Virginia on December 28, 1829. George W. Herring died on July 23 1876, and is buried on his land in the Herring Private Cemetery #1 in Callaway Co. Missouri.
 
Lucy Simco Herring, wife of George Washington Herring Sr. Lucy was my great great grandmother. Picture taken before 1875. Lucy was born in Madison Co. Virginia on November 28, 1808 and was a daughter of James and Francis Canada Simco. Lucy and George had 10 children. Lucy died on April 7 1896, and is buried in the Herring Private Cemetery #1 in Callaway Co. Missouri.
 
My father, David Wilson Herring, in 1917 and in 1918. He was the son of Dolor Washington and Josephine Carter Herring. His grandparents were George Washington and Josema Allen Herring, and John R. and Margaret Fletcher Carter. He was born in Fulton Mo. in April of 1917 and died in Robinson Il, in October 1981. He married Iris Nadine Carrington on December 23, 1946.
 
Josephine Herring, my father's younger sister. She was born May 25, 1919, daugther of Dolor Washington and Jo Carter Herring. She was hit and killed by a car when she was 3 years old in downtown Fulton, Missouri on Oct 21, 1922. She was always called "babydear".
 
My father and his sisters, Josephine and Margaret Herring. This picture was taken in October of 1921. Their father, Dolor Herring, was a lawyer and judge in Fulton until his death in 1937.
 
Margaret Herring, my father's older sister, taken in 1930. This was her high school graduation picture, Fulton High School, Fulton Missouri, 1930. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1930, and went by the nickname of Peggy. In school she was a member of the Glee Club, the Girls Chorus, the Carnival, the Orchestra, and the Girls Hiking Club. Margaret was born Oct 6, 1911 and died from Tuberculosis on Jan 18, 1936 when she was 25 years old.
 
John R. Carter, my great grandfather, was born November 5, 1844 in Callaway Co. Missouri. He was a son of John G. Carter and Matilda J. Herring. His daughter, Josephine Carter, and Dolor Herring were my father's parents. He married Margaret Ann Fletcher on January 30, 1868. She was a daughter of John F. Fletcher and Judith Simco. John R. Carter died August 22, 1910 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Fulton Missouri. This picture was taken in 1897.
 
My great grandaunt, Martha Elizabeth "Bettie" Carter. She was a daughter of John G. Carter and Matilda Jane Herring. This picture probably taken mid to late 1870's, Fulton, Missouri.
 
My father, David Herring, while stationed in India in 1943, during WWII. He went from India to Tinian Island. 667th Bomb Squadron, 444th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force.
 
My father and his mother, Josephine Carter Herring about 1948 in Fulton Missouri. Josephine was the daughter of John R. and Margaret Fletcher Carter, Grandaughter of John G. and Mitilda Herring Carter and John F. and Judith Simco Fletcher.
Josephine Carter Herring was born 15 Oct 1881 in Callaway Co. Mo., and died 3 Oct 1961.

Four of my father's uncles in 1950, Herbert Herring b: 1887 d: 1968, Woodson Herring b: 1895 d: 1979, Grover Herring b: 1884 d: 1967, Norman "Pete" Herring b: 1889 d: 1987. All sons of George Washington Herring Jr. and Josima McNerva Allen, grandsons of George Washington Herring Sr. and Lucy Simco.
 
My mother and her two brothers, taken in 1942. Pilot, Lt. Carson W Carrington 344th Bomb Group, 494th Bomb Squadron. 23rd September 1944 shot down by flak over Venlo, Holland in B26 42-107679 K9-M Silver Streaks 60th mission. Carson Carrington is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington. Rex Owen Carrington, b: 1938. Iris Nadine Carrington, b: 1923 d: 1995.
 
My Great Grandparents on my mother's side, Nathanial and Eliza S. Herring Carrington. Nathanial Carrington was a son of Samuel Carrington and a grandson of Randolph Carrington, founder of Carrington Missouri. Eliza S. Herring was a daughter of George W. and Hester A. Kemp Herring, and a grandaughter of John and Lucy Carver Herring. Nathanial was born in 1860 and died in 1912, Eliza was born in 1862 and died in 1941. They had 11 children, one of whom was Carson (Jack) Dillard Carrington, my mother's father.
 
My grandfather, Carson Dillard "Jack" Carrington, taken in 1964. He was a son of Nathanial and Eliza Carrington, great grandson of Randolph Carrington. Born April 5, 1901, died June 28, 1978 in Callaway Co. Missouri. On December 23, 1919 he married Mary Leona Wilks.
 
Mary Leona Wilks, my grandmother. She was a daughter of James Rufus Wilks and Oddie Elizabeth Day, grandaughter of Sanders Perfect Day and Permelia Overton, and, William Henry Wilks and Rebecca Overstreet. Mary was born March 25, 1900 and died February 20, 1957 in Callaway Co. Missouri. This picture was taken at the log house just south of Auxvasse, about 1912.
 
Benjamin Francis Overton, my great great great Grandfather. Benjamin was a popular and prosperous man who bore the dubious distinction of having the first skirmish of the Civil War in Callaway County fought on his farm. It was known as the Battle of Overton's Run because after the first shots were fired, the Callawegians "ran" not for cover, but for home! He owned a lot of land, and toward his later years he was a large cattle farmer. This picture was taken about 1880.
 
Permelia Frances Overton Day, daughter of Benjamin F. and Ann S. Holt Overton of Callaway Co. Mo. She was the first wife of Sanders Perfect Day. Permelia was my 2nd Great Grandmother, mother of Oddie Day Wilks. This tintype picture was taken about 1878 in Texas, 2 years before her death. She would have been about 25 years old in this picture.
 
On the back of this picture was written Day - James. It has always been family legend that Saunders Perfect Day (my 2nd Great Grandfather) was aquainted with the James brothers. He was the same age as Frank James, he lived in the same area of Missouri during the right time period. Whether this is actually a picture of one of the James boys and Sanders Day or not I don't know. Approx. date of this picture is late 1860's. Some of the Day brothers were part of a gang, Sanders brother William ended up in jail.
 
This picture was taken in Wyandotte Kansas, 1890. On the left is Oddie E. Day, (my great grandmother) about 14 years old, her new step-mother, Margaret Crooks, Margaret's son Charles Crooks, and Oddie's father, Sanders P. Day. Oddie spent a great part of her childhood living with her father's sister, Aunt Mag. Charles Crooks became a Presbyterian Minister, Surgeon, doctor and missionary to Siam. He and his wife Florance built a hospital in Siam.
 
John F. and Margaret Elizabeth Day Stringer. This is the Aunt Mag that Odie Day lived with, she was a sister of Sanders Day. Daughter of Eliza Clendennen and Truman Day. Truman Day founded the town of Portland Mo. This picture was taken about 1890. Family legend says when John Stringer died in 1902, a women came from Oregon and claimed his body as her husband. Margaret was born 1865 and died 1943 in Callaway County.

James Rufus and Oddie Eizabeth Day Wilks family in 1915. The names and ages are on the larger picture. James Rufus Wilks was born at Taylor's Store, Franklin Co, VA 30 May 1871. He came to Callaway Co. Mo. about 1890. Odie Elizabeth Day was born in Fort Worth, Tarrant Co, TX, 19 May 1876. Her father, Sanders Perfect Day was from Callaway Co., and returned there after Odie was born.
 
Leo and Pearl English Wilks, about 1915. Leo was the oldest son of James Rufus and Oddie E. Day Wilks. Pearl was the daughter of James R. and Sophia English. In the 1950's and 1960's the Wilks family reunions were held at Leo Wilks farm, south east of Auxvasse every year. Leo and Pearl were married on December 1, 1915 and had 4 children. Leo was born in 1894 and lived to be 101 years old.
 
Elizabeth Overton Wilks, my great Aunt Bessie. Daughter of James Rufus Wilks and Oddie E. Day. This picture was taken about 1915. She married Homer Owen on March 6, 1916 and they lived all their lives in Auxvasse. He was a stockman, they had no children. My mother was born at Aunt Bessie's house in 1923. Uncle Homer was famous for his mule stories....

Children of Dabney Carver Herring and Mary Francis Simco, all were my 1st cousins 3 times removed. They were all grandchildren of Reuben Brooks Simco and Sarah Cowherd Hill, and, John Herring and Lucy Carver. Seated from left are Lucy Herring Henderson (born 1862, married J. Henderson), William Thomas Herring (born 1860, married Annie Meloy), Louellen Herring Roberts (born 1857, married Wesley G. Roberts), (standing) Charles Guy Herring (born 1880, married Katheryn Randolph), Ira Brooks Herring (born 1872, married Maude Hook), Emma Herring Mirts (born 1869, married John Mirts), Sarah Herring Jatho (born 1866, married Henry Jatho), and Mary Herring Hyten (born 1864, married Hiram Hyten). Reuben B. Simco was also the brother of my great great grandmothers, Lucy Simco Herring and Judith Simce Fletcher. Dabney Herring was my 3 times great Uncle, his wife Mary Francis was my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Gideon Carver Herring family, about 1882. Gideon was a son of John Herring and Lucy Carver. He married Lucy Jane Simco, daughter of Reuben Brooks Simco and Sarah Cowherd Hill in 1857. Sterling Price Beavens and Mary Christian Suggett. Sterling was the son of Charles Milton Beaven & Frances Isabella Miller. He married Mary Christian Suggett on 11 August 1886 & they had 7 children. Sterling was a farmer & attorney in Callaway Co., Missouri. He was probate judge from 1899 to 1910 & State Senator from 1911 to 1914. Mary Christian Suggett was a daughter of Benjamin Suggett and Jane Francis Herring. She was a grandaughter of George W. Herring Sr. and Lucy Simco, and, Rev. James Suggett and Sallie Ridden. Mary was my 1st cousin twice removed.
