Nathan Herring and Susan Hill


Nathan Herring was my both my 2nd great granduncle, and my 3rd great granduncle. He was a son of George and Elizabeth Closby Herring. He was the brother of my 2nd great grandfather George W. Herring Sr. and my 3rd great grandfather John Herring. He was also a nephew of my 4th great grandfather, Benjamin Herring.

Nathan was born December 26, 1799 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. On November 1, 1827, he married Susan Hill of Albemarle County. Susan Hill was born in 1802. We believe that Susan was a cousin of Nancy Hill, daughter of Henry Hill and Susannah Jones, wife of Benjamin Herring. In 1835, Nathan and his family, along with his brother George W. Herring Sr. and family, came to Callaway County Missouri from Albemarle County Virginia.

note: Pleasant Dowell from their marriage bond, was married to Nancy Hill, daughter of Charles and Molly Hill, grandaughter of Henry and Susannah Jones Hill. This Nancy Hill was a niece of the previously mentioned Nancy Hill.

She was a daughter of John F. Fletcher and Judith Simco and was my great grandaunt.

The children's names came from the 1850 Missouri census records. The marriages came from the Callaway County Marriages 1821 - 1872 index. The 1840 census, which does not list names other than head of household, showed 2 daughters between 10 and 15 years old, which is how I knew to look for Georgie Anne as she was married and not listed on the 1850 census. I had found her marriage recorded, so I knew her name.

Nathan Herring died Apr. 3, 1884 in Fulton, Callaway Co., Missouri and is buried in the Pioneer cemetery, Fulton, Callaway Co., Missouri.

On April 3d in this city at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Judt, Mr. Nathan Herring, aged 85 years.

Susan Hill Herring died July 28, 1884 in Fulton, Callaway Co., Missouri and is buried in the Pioneer cemetery, Fulton, Callaway Co., Missouri.

Nathan and Susan Hill Herring are both buried in Pioneer cemetery, Fulton, Callaway Co., Missouri. Pioneer is the old original Fulton city cemetery and has been neglected and vandalized over the years. Some Herring family member, and I have not been able to find out who, put a large headstone in Pioneer for Nathan and Susan Herring. It was probably put up in the last 30 years. It is in very good shape, not vandalized at all. I'm sure their original headstones had been knocked down and destroyed. There is a picture of this headstone in my cemetery directory.
