John P. Herring was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. He was born March 29, 1821 in Albemarle Co. Virginia. He had 9 brothers and 2 sisters, and was my 2nd great granduncle.

Drowned
It is our painful duty to record the unfortunate drowning of another young man in the railroad pond in this city. The accident occurred on last Saturday evening, about 7 o'clock. The unfortunate victim was John W. Herring, son of John Herring, who lives near Holt's Summit in this county. The young man was about 23 years of age, and was a pupil at our public school, and was highly respected by all who knew him. On the evening above mentioned, he went to the pond to bathe. He soon got into very deep water and being unable to swim, sank to the bottom. The alarm was soon spread and every exertion made by our people to recover the body. After searching for an hour or more, the body was found and brought up by Hugh Magorian, a mere boy. The water at the place where the body was found was ten feet deep. Every effort was made to resuscitate him by Dr. Brooks, but the vital spark had fled.
The entire community deeply sympathize with the relatives and friends of the deceased.
