James Clark Herring and Sarah Jane Knight

James C. Herring was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. He was born Aug 7, 1819 in Charlottesville, Albemarle Co. Virginia. He had 9 brothers and 2 sisters, and was my 2nd great granduncle.

Sarah was born January 2, 1821 in Fleming Co. Kentucky. Her grandparents, James Knight and Nancy Williams, were originally from Maryland and settled in Fleming Co., Kentucky. In 1828, Sarah's family came to Callaway Co., Missouri.

    • Anna is Robert's second wife, I do not believe they had any children. On the 1900 census, there is an 8 year old child named George Herring, cousin, listed as living with this couple. George is the son of William Henry Herring and Nevada Dorsey. When Nevada died, their 5 young children were seperated and sent to live with other people. George's sister, Jessie is living elsewhere at the time, but dies in 1906 at the age of 14 and is buried in the Dunlap Cemetery. Anna is the first cousin once removed of George and Jessie.

    • From The Telegraph and The Missouri Telegraph:

His sister Mary Elizabeth died of the "flux" 23 days earlier, I would imagine he died of the same thing.

From the book A History of Callaway County 1884:

In the fall of 1841, James C. became the administrator of his cousin John B. Herring's estate. He would have been appointed as the oldest son of the nearest relative. Being administrator involved a lot of work, it took nearly 5 years to finish the probate packet for John B. Herring. Here's a link to the probate packets that I have scanned so far and transcribed. Below is an image of James C. Herring's signature in 1841.
