George Washington Herring and Hester Ann Kemp



George W. Herring was my great great gandfather. He was born in Albemarle Co. Virginia on July 10, 1823, and was 15 years old when the family came to Callway County Missouri. He was a son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. note: we share the same birthday... July 10

On March 9, 1843, George married Hester Ann Kemp. She was born Feb 28, 1824 in Franklin Virginia. Hester was a daughter of Walter Kemp and Jerusha Key.

Walter Kemp was born Oct. 27, 1785 in Bedford Co., Virginia, died Nov. 21, 1852 in Callaway Co., Missouri. He was a son of Thomas Cauper Kemp, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Esther Maxey, both born in Virginia. Jerusha Key was born Mar. 7, 1794 in Franklin Co., Virginia and died Aug. 20, 1840 in Callaway Co., Missouri. She was a daughter of George Key, a Revolutionary War veteran, born 1753 in Bedford Co., Virginia and Susannah Suckey Craghead, born Sept. 1764 in Franklin Co., Virginia, and died after 1840 in Callaway Co., Missouri. Walter Kemp and Jerusha Key were 1st cousins once removed.

George Washington Herring and Hester Ann Kemp had at least 11 children, several dying young. Their daughter, Elisa S. Herring was my great grandmother. Children of George and Hester Herring:

George Washington Herring and Hester Ann Kemp Herring are both buried in the Herring Private Cemetery #2, Callaway Co. Missouri. Her headstone has been found, his has been destroyed. George died Sept 20, 1878. Hester died August 27, 1899.

Herring - Died at his late residence, Mr. Geo W. Herring, on Thursday, September 20, 1878, from the effects of a carbuncle on his throat.
      Mr. Herring was born July 10th, A.D, 1823 and was married to Miss Hester Ann Herring, [s/b Kemp] March 9th, 1843. He joined the Christian church some thirty years ago, and died rejoicing in the hope of immortality. He leaves a widow and nine children, and many relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him, as the large concourse of people who attended the funeral services conducted by the writer, testified. May God bless the widow and children. E. H. C.
