Andrew Carver Herring and Latitia E. Crooks

Andrew Carver Herring was the son of John and Lucy Carver Herring. He was born Nov. 25, 1827 in Albemarle Co. Virginia. He had 9 brothers, and 2 sisters, and was my 2nd great granduncle.

Andrew married Latitia E. Crooks on March 14, 1850 in Callaway County Missouri. Latitia was a daughter of John Crooks and Margaret Hughart, originally of Kentucky. Latitia had 1 brother and 5 sisters. She was born in June of 1832 in Callaway Co., Missouri.

Andrew was in the Civil War on the Union side. He was ordered into service Dec 3, 1862 in the Callaway Battalian out of Fulton, Missouri. He was promoted to a Corporal Feb 23, 1863, and was relieved from duty Feb. 3 1864.

            DIED Herring - On the 13th day of September 1877, of consumption, Mrs. Martha A. Herring, wife of Mr. Mark Herring, in her twenty fifth year.
            Mrs. Herring was the daughter of Mr. J. Carrington. She made a profession of religion in 1866 and joined the Baptist Church at Brick Providence, and was baptised by the writer, who was her pastor up to the time of her death. She was a lady possessing many noble traits of character. An affectionate daughter, a kind friend, a faithful wife, a humble Christian. She died in faith in a precious Redeemer and in hope of a crown of glory beyond the river of death, leaving many friends to mourn her loss, but pecious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints.

Stella's mother died 3 days after Stella was born. After her birth she was raised by her grandparents, James M. Jackson and Eliza M. Howe. There is no sign that she ever lived with her father and his second wife.

        • He was a small time gangster in Kansas City, known as Silk Hat Harry. He was shot to death on the street in Kansas City.


The book left out the fact that son John Milton Herring's wife, Josephine Jackson, had died in 1877, and by the time the book was published, John Milton Herring had remarried and had children.
